Ylang-Ylang Q&A

Full size, dwarf or vine?

Depending on how much space you have and your personal preferences, you can choose the ylang ylang plant that works for you. The full size ylang ylang tree can grow up to 100 feet tall in the right conditions. There is also a dwarf version of the ylang ylang that will stay to a more manageable height of 9 feet or less. If you prefer a vine, there is a ylang ylang vine. It is actually in a different plant family, but the aromatic flowers look similar and produce a similar intoxicating fragrance.

Is it an herb?

No. While you might think that the ylang ylang is an aromatic herb, it is not. It is actually in the annonaceae family which includes the popular sugar apple and soursop. The flowers are used for essential oils. While we would not call they ylang ylang an aromatic plant to grow indoors, we would certainly recommend bringing the flowers indoors and placing them in a dish of water to spread their fragrance throughout the home.
